General William T. Sherman gallantly led Union forces through the South in 1864 and 1865. The Western Division is named after General Sherman because of his work in surveying and laying out the grid for the City of Sacramento, California in the 1840's and 1850's. General Sherman has been much maligned over the years. The Union Veterans Union is proud to have his name attached to our Western Division for all that he did to preserve the Union and the work he did after the war in securing the rights and benefits for our gallant boys in blue.
